Volkswagen has resolved the issue that led to the recall of its ID.4 electric vehicles and is resuming production and sales at dealerships near you.
In September, VW recalled nearly 100,000 ID.4 models due to a defect in the door handles. The handles could allow water to seep into the circuit board, potentially causing the doors to open unexpectedly. At the time, VW anticipated the production halt could extend into early 2024, temporarily furloughing around 200 workers.
Now, three months later, the fix has been developed, implemented in some vehicles, and is being installed at VW’s Tennessee factory. Dealerships have also started applying the repair, and sales have resumed. A local dealer reported that about 10% of their inventory has been updated, with some vehicles already sold. If you’re in the market for an ID.4, you should find availability at dealerships now or very soon.
The affected vehicles include ID.4 models from 2021 to 2024. VW will notify owners shortly to schedule the free repair, estimated to take about four hours. Importantly, there was no “stop-drive” order, so owners can continue using their vehicles until the fix is completed.
VW has officially announced that the ID.4 is back on sale, with production ramping up in the coming weeks. The company aims to restore the ID.4’s position as a top-selling EV in the U.S. and Canada.
