NEMA has introduced its EVSE Power Export Permitting Standard, setting technical guidelines to enable bidirectional charging, allowing EVs to both draw and supply power back to the grid.
The new standard outlines key parameters in electrical systems, communications, and cybersecurity for permitting power export between EV supply equipment and the grid. With vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home/building (V2H, V2B) capabilities, EVs can function as mobile energy storage units, helping power homes, buildings, or even the grid.
This technology could also provide financial benefits, allowing EV owners to store energy during off-peak hours and sell it back at a profit when demand is high.
Patrick Hughes, NEMA’s Senior VP of Technical Affairs, emphasized its role in improving grid resilience, stating that local jurisdictions should reference the standard when permitting these systems. David Kendall, Director of Industry Affairs at ABB, added that the standard enhances installation safety while strengthening grid stability and maximizing consumer benefits.
