LG Innotek, the electric component-making wing of South Korea’s LG Group said that it has developed a wireless battery management system, or BMS, for electric vehicles. The battery management system (BMS) is essential to manage the safety, charging and discharge of the electricity in the EVs.
The BMS is an essential component for the Electric Vehicle technology as it optimizes the battery’s performance and lifespan by monitoring battery voltage, electric current and temperature in the real time basis.
The brand says that the wireless feature makes EV lighter by up to 90 KG in comparison to ordinary BMS, which uses various cables and lines and also takes up to 15% of a car’s battery pack space. But the wireless BMS doesn’t need all that. That makes wireless BMS systems an emerging key component of autonomous vehicles or electric vehicles.
LG Innotek said that the company’s 40-year experience of making wireless communication devices has helped the development of the new BMS. The new system module was designed to be compatible with all types of wireless BMS communication chips as well as various EV platforms.
The LG’s wireless BMS works with 800V batteries, the highest voltage adopted by the commercialized EVs globally so far. Further the higher the voltage, the shorter the charging time required for electric vehicles batteries.
The brand said that this wireless BMS will be displayed at the world’s largest consumer electronic show– CES 2024, ready to open next month in Las Vegas. It further states that the it plans to mass-production of the BMS in next year.
On the event Moon Hyuk-soo, CEO of the company also said that “LG Innotek will continue to expand its position as a total solution provider of electronic components that provides differentiated customer value.”
