A new patent filed by Fords for a “Multi-Voltage Electrical Architectures For Electrified Vehicles” reveals that the company is going to draw some crazy modification in its EVs. It looks like the automakers could level the playing field with 800V fast charging for its next-gen EVs.
The company shows the details that it is an 800V fast charging system for EVs that uses a multi-voltage charging circuit that comes after the first voltage level of 400V.
Ford’s CEO said that the company was working on a low-cost EV platform earlier this month. He added that Ford put together a “super talented skunk works team” to develop it . Although it’s a small team, it includes “some of the best EV engineers in the world.”
To formulate their big plans for next-gen EVs, Ford has come up with one of them – an 800V fast charging architecture to keep the pace with other competitors like Porsche, Hyundai and Kia. On this note Ford’s CEO Jim Frley said a “ seismic change” has shaken the EV market.
There are two firm reasons behind the change siad Farley. The major is price cuts from EV makers like Tesla. And the second is a “Tremendous amount” of capital and new capacity surging in the two-row crossover segment.
Presently Ford’s best selling EV is the Mustang Mach-E that was the second best-selling electric SUV behind Tesla’s Model Y, rivals like Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 are stealing market share. The Q4 seals of the Mach-E were up 4.6% with 11,369 units handed over.
The next-gen EVs will thoroughly have “breakthrough efficiency” compared to current models and will be “ packed with innovation that customers are going to be excited to pay for, said Farley.
