Finally! After years of speculation Chinese automaker BYD is now introducing its hybrid pickup – the Shark. It will join the fleet of electrified pickups in the near future. BYD has shown it’s new Shark Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) pickup in Mexico this week. With its hybrid pickup BYD is aiming to compete against the globally renowned trucks including Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.
Since spotted for the first time by the CarNewsChina at BYD’s facility, the news of new pickup by BYD has been getting the limelight. Also the leaked patents give the sight of design, prototype, testing and more.
At the overnight launch event in Mexico, finally BYD official debut of the pickup. BYD says the Shark PHEV pickup will be available in the two variants :- the GL and GS.
The Shark plug-in Hybrid – Specs and Performance
The Sharks is based on BYD’s DMO platform, featuring 170 kW (220hp) front and 150 kW (201 hp) rear motors. The truck produced a combined 429 hp with the sprint form 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in just 5.7 seconds. For power there is a 29.58 kWh BYD Blade battery in the Shark, that has an all-electric NEDC range of 100 km (62 mi) and a combined NEDC range is 840 km (522 mi).
The Shark pickup is 5,457 mm long. 1971 mm wide and, 1,925 mm tall that make it a straight rival to the top-selling trucks like the Toyota Hilux (5,325 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, and 1,815 mm long) and Ford Ranger (5,370 mm long, 1,918 mm wide and 1,884 mm long).)
Inside you can see other BYD design features like a rotatable 12.8-inch center screen and 10.25-inch instrument panel. BYD said the Shark has low charger fuel consumption of 7.5 L per 1000 km. Which is 40% lower than that of full gas -powered engine pickups.
BYD America CEO Stella Li also confirmed that the company has no plans to sell the Shark, or any passenger EV in the US. Meanwhile, BED does plan to take Shark globally. A right-hand drive prototype was spotted testing in Australia earlier this year, suggesting it could launch there soon. The company also debuted it in global markets including Thailand, South Africa and parts of Europe. For further update stay connected!
