Xpeng is a renowned Chinese automaker that has officially confirmed the model name and shared the first images. After several reports suggested that XPeng’s next battery electric vehicles (BEV) would forego LiDAR in favor of pure vision cameras. The new BEV, called the P7+, marks a significant shift in XPeng’s technology strategy, with its founder heralding it as a vehicle poised to “open a new era of intelligent driving.”
XPeng Motors ($XPEV) was among the pioneers in integrating LiDAR sensors into mass-market BEVs. It is a move that established the company as a leader in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and self-driving technology. Its XNGP software has emerged as a formidable competitor to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD), boasting full deployment across China.
XPeng Motors has been gradually transitioning from LiDAR sensors to pure vision cameras. This shift, which has been in the works since February 2024, will debut in the P7+, the latest model from XPeng. The company confirmed the transition and the new model name via social media in China.
The initial images of the P7+, formerly codenamed “F57,” reveal a vehicle over 5 meters (16.4 feet) long, surpassing the 4.88 meters of the existing P7 sedan. The increased length is expected to provide more cabin and cargo space, enhancing the vehicle’s practicality.
XPeng’s founder, chairman, and CEO, He Xiaopeng, shared a few key details about the P7+ on Weibo:
Recently, I have been fully preparing for the details of XPeng MONA M03, as well as its mass production and delivery. Regarding the new models that everyone has discussed a lot in the past two days, I can only briefly talk about 3 points:
Point 1: P7+
Point 2: 5 meters+
Point 3: Technology+
These points hint at the P7+’s advanced technological features, which will include pure vision cameras integrated into the vehicle’s ADAS and self-driving capabilities.
Xiaopeng emphasized that the P7+ is on a mission to “open a new era of intelligent driving.” The vehicle is expected to leverage pure vision technology and XPeng’s AI-powered operating system to deliver cutting-edge ADAS and self-driving functionalities.
The P7+ is anticipated to launch in Q4 2024. In the meantime, XPeng remains focused on the upcoming release of the MONA M03 sedan, urging the public to stay tuned for its imminent debut.
