NIO, a Chinese EV maker, recently said that its new EV boasts around 200 more miles than Tesla’s flagship model. It has been possible with its new 150 kWh ultra-long-range battery pack in the E17, which is capable of driving over 621 miles (1,000 km) on a single charge.
This news came after the brand posted that “On December 17, 2023, NIO founder, Chairman and CEO William drove an ET7 to test the 150-kWh ultra-long-range battery pack. After driving for over 14 hours, the car achieved a range of over 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. NIO is able to record these figures in real-world conditions.
It is an impressive range that might beat some of the leading EVS also including Tesla Model S, a direct rival which offers an EPS estimated range of 405 miles (651 km). The difference between both is roughly 200 miles. In other words ET7 offers 50% more of what the Tesla sedan can offer.
This figure came out based on the CLTC standard, which is more forgiving than the EPA’s measurement. Therefore it is expected that the number gets lowered if ever the EPS gets its hands on the Nio ET7. Irrespective of that, the ET7 is still ahead of the Model S according to CLTC standards. Which estimated a range of about 444 miles to Model S.
The ET7 achieved that milestone due to its huge 150 kWh battery pack. Which is said to be larger than the one in the Ford-150 Lightning truck EV. The brand also claims that the battery pack can cool six times faster than conventional batteries, with each cell having an energy density of 360 Wh/kg.
Further the battery could also easily be swappable with the EV maker owing over 2,000 power swap stations in China and Europe. The long range Nio ET7 could be an alternative to the Tesla Model S. However the EV model won’t arrive stateside because of America’s aversion to China.
Regardless, the two EVs will still go head-to-head in China and Europe, which should become more interesting once the ultra-long-range battery pack becomes an option.
