Tesla, the well known brand in the electric vehicle market, is leg behind by the Chinese automaker in volume. Elon Musk the Tesla CEO used to make fun of BYD, in Q4 overtook the Tesla in overall battery-electric vehicle volume.
With it’s continuous efforts and innovations BYD took the limelight throughout the year. Further with many variations of that headline, take the note of the followers over a year ago, but it isn’t as significant as it is today.
As we all witness how the automakers transfer it’s business from gas to hybrids, plug-in or pure electric one. Where Tesla has always been in the race of pure electric, battery-electric vehicle manufacturers. Meanwhile many of the other automakers, including BYD, have widened its scope with hybrids, plug-in.
Electric vehicles market has seen how BYD’s own vehicle offering has changed a lot since it’s debut and focused more on plug-in hybrids a decade ago.
Where the brand has been mockery by automakers in it’s initial but BYD along with it’s home market in China has gradually become the biggest player in the world in the electric vehicle space.
BYD delivered a total of 526,400 all-electric vehicles in Q4,2023 compared to Tesla’s overall 484,500 vehicles. These figures said that BYD has overtaken Tesla in total TV volume, which has remained leader with electric-battery vehicles till the present time.
Those recorded figures reveal that in automobile history it is the first time that BYD achieved more BEVs delivery than Tesla in a single quarter. Here it needed to consider BYD’s great presence in it’s home China, that crater over 1 billion population than the Tesla home market U.S.
BYD with its wider range of models than Tesla, also offers a large price blanket and it is known for offering at the lower end of the market.
But if you compare the figure of overall 2023, Tesla has still sold more BEVs than its competitor BYD. Tesla delivered 1.8 million of battery electric vehicle counterpart of 1.6 million of BYD. But the proximity of the figures sounds like it’s going to be the last year where BYD leg behind the Tesla in overall BEVs sales.
