In the same 2024, Hyundai Motors has for the second time recalled its electric vehicles. This time the automaker is recalling 145,235 EVs and other “electrified ” vehicles in the US. This news citing the concerns about a loss of driving power, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Friday.

Hyundai IONIQ 5

Reuters reported that the administrative authority NHTSA announced that the recall affects only the selected IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 5 EV, as well as certain luxury Genesis models, including the GV60, GV70, and GV80 electrified variants, from the 2022-2025 model years. There have been some more reports citing Kia models also a part of the recall, but we’re still waiting on confirmation at the time of writing.

According to the NHTSA, the problem originates from the integrated charging control units in these vehicles, which can become damaged and fail to charge the 12-volt battery. This failure could result in a complete loss of drive power, creating potential safety risks for drivers.

It is not new in the electric vehicle industry. Hyundai, Kia and Genesis also issued a similar recall for 147,110 electric vehicles back in March. This recall centered, again, around damaged integrated charging control units failing to charge the battery.

If you own a 2022-2025 Hyundai model affected by this issue, keep an eye out for updates. Hyundai has yet to announce a timeline for repairs.

When the process begins, dealers will inspect the charging unit and fuse, replacing them if needed, and perform a software update to address the issue.

Fortunately, Hyundai has confirmed that no crashes, injuries, fatalities, or fires related to this problem have been reported in the US.
