Tesla is preparing to launch its first full-scale Tesla public charging station for electric semi trucks, and newly revealed site plans provide a first glimpse at the design.
With volume production of the Tesla Semi anticipated to begin by the end of the year, Tesla is now preparing to establish charging infrastructure for these trucks on the roads. The company has already built a Tesla public charging station, often called a Megacharger, but it is currently located near Gigafactory Nevada and primarily serves Tesla’s internal fleet of Semi trucks.
Last year, Tesla introduced a mobile Megacharger. Now, according to a permit application discovered by @MarcoRPi1, the company is preparing to install its first permanent public Megacharger station.
According to the site plan, Tesla is preparing to install 12 Megacharger stalls designed to accommodate both trucks and their trailers. Additionally, the company plans to build a 1,600-square-foot amenity facility featuring a lounge, vending machines, restrooms, and designated parking for staff.
The upcoming Megacharger is set to be installed at 19300 S Hamilton Ave, near Carson in the greater Los Angeles area.
The Megacharger is strategically positioned along the busy 405 and 110 corridors, near the Port of Long Beach. As the name suggests, it is designed to deliver over 1 MW of charging power. According to Tesla, the Tesla Semi can regain 70% of its 500-mile range in just 30 minutes of charging.
Tesla is setting up its first volume production line for the Tesla Semi at a newly constructed facility next to Gigafactory Nevada. Production is slated to begin later this year, with a ramp-up to full-scale manufacturing expected next year. At present, only a few dozen Tesla Semi trucks are in operation, primarily within Tesla’s own fleet and a select group of customers.
