As electric vehicles (EVs) become more popular in regions like the United States and Europe, it’s crucial for owners to understand how to properly care for their cars, especially during extreme weather conditions. While winter can present challenges, summer heat can also significantly affect EV performance and charging efficiency. Here’s a comprehensive guide to ensure your EV remains in top condition during the hotter months.

Why Summer Heat Matters for EVs

Extreme heat can accelerate the rate of chemical reactions within an EV’s lithium-ion battery, leading to faster degradation and potentially reducing its lifespan. Additionally, high temperatures can cause thermal throttling, where the battery management system (BMS) limits charging speeds to prevent overheating.

Key Summer Charging Practices

  1. Preconditioning the Battery

Preconditioning adjusts the battery temperature before charging. Most modern EVs automatically precondition the battery when you set your destination to a charging station in the navigation system. This helps ensure optimal charging temperatures are reached by the time you arrive. Energy Efficiency Tip: Whenever possible, precondition the battery while the vehicle is plugged in, using energy from the grid rather than the battery itself.

  1. Minimize Use of DC Fast Charging

Frequent use of DC fast chargers in high heat can lead to thermal throttling, reducing charging speeds. Use Level 2 chargers whenever possible, especially during peak heat times. Level 2 charging overnight, when temperatures are cooler, can be more efficient and help reduce stress on the battery.

  1. Limit State of Charge (SoC) to 80%

Charging to 80% instead of 100% helps maintain a cooler battery and reduces degradation. Set the SoC limit in your EV’s charging settings. This is often more than enough for daily driving needs and helps extend battery life.

  1. Utilize Shade and Cooling Techniques

Parking and charging in shaded areas can help keep the battery and the car’s cabin cooler. For older Tesla Superchargers, placing a wet towel on the charging handle can help reduce its temperature, improving charging speeds. Use this technique with caution and be aware of safety limits.

  1. Optimize Driving Habits

Use Eco or Chill mode to reduce power consumption and keep the battery cooler. Easing up on acceleration can help conserve battery power and maintain a lower temperature.

Real-World Impacts

In regions like the Midwest and Northeast of the United States, as well as parts of Europe, recent heatwaves have highlighted the need for these practices. For example, during a severe heatwave affecting 135 million people, temperatures soared to 100°F (38°C) in some areas, placing additional stress on EVs and charging infrastructure.

Expert Recommendations

  • Battery Health Start-ups: Companies like Recurrent emphasize the importance of managing heat to prevent accelerated battery degradation.
  • Charging Networks: Providers such as ChargePoint and EVgo offer tips on optimal charging practices during summer to ensure efficient and safe battery management.

By following these best practices, EV owners can maintain their vehicle’s performance and longevity even in the hottest weather.
