The growing market of BYD encourages the brand to expand its business overseas on this series. And the buzz around another battery technology rather than lithium-ion battery is also capturing the attention of many automakers and governments. Until now the development in the process of the sodium-ion battery remains on speculation but from now it is going to be real. BYD has announced the it is on the trek to build its first Sodium-Ion battery plant with the investment of $1.4 billion with 30GWh annual capacity.
On that event a Chinese company, New Energy Think Tank (NETT) state, “On the morning of January 4, the 2024 city-wide major industrial project construction kick-off meeting and the BYD (Xuzhou) sodium-ion battery project kick-off event were held in the Xuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone,”
In the domain of electric vehicles BYD has topped the market giant Tesla in overall EV volume. That puts BYD in the first position in the electric car markers. where BYD is also playing a significant role in global battery manufacture. To unlock the market for lower prices, more range, faster charging with less use of raw material, automakers are on the quest of developing new chemistries for future batteries.
New Sodium-Ion Battery Powered By BYD
Since it is found that sodium-ion batteries can be a cheaper alternative to lithium, automakers try to fit it in EVs. In this race FinDreams and Huaihai agreed to build the first BYD sodium-ion battery plant in Xuzhou in November. These batteries are welcomed in low-cost cars or two-wheelers that don’t need the higher energy density.
The sodium-ion battery plant is one of the agreements between BYD and Huaihai. Both companies started their partnership earlier in November 2022 to build a plant for Blade battery production. That construction began last January and early production is planned for march. This creates rumor in the market that BYD’s Seaguli would come with a sodium-ion battery. But the launch of Seaguli with an LFP Blade battery cleared the confusion.
BYD says these batteries will apparently be used in electric scooters and micro vehicles as those are seen by BYD to be the best applications for sodium-ion batteries at the moment.
