A Tesla executive has confirmed that the company will introduce updates to its Model S and Model X vehicle programs later this year.
Tesla Plans Model S & Model X Updates in 2024
Tesla last refreshed its flagship Model S and Model X in 2021, but the update failed to significantly boost sales. Initially, Tesla aimed for 100,000 combined units annually, but by last year, deliveries had dropped to nearly half that number.
The decline is partly due to increased competition from Lucid, Rivian, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, as well as internal cannibalization—Tesla’s more affordable Model 3 and Model Y have received more attention and upgrades in recent years. Now, Tesla officially confirmed that updates are coming. Lars Moravy, Tesla’s Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, made the announcement during a recent appearance on the Ride the Lightning podcast. More details about the upcoming changes are expected in the coming months.
Just give it a minute. We’ll get there. The upgrade a few years ago was bigger than most people thought in terms of architecture and structure; We’ll give it some love later this year; Everyone here has a little place in their heard for S/X. They are not going anywhere anytime soon.
The executive did not provide specific details about the update, but it is likely to include features similar to those introduced in the latest Model 3 and Model Y refresh.
Tesla rarely announces upcoming vehicle updates or addresses leaks, primarily to avoid the Osborne effect—a phenomenon where early discussions about future products can negatively impact sales of current models.
