On Thursday Hyundai unveiled its newest electric vehicle (EV) the Creta Electric SUV. The coming EV features bold design elements from the Hyundai’s IONIQ lineup and has a range of nearly 300 miles.

Mr. Tarun Garg, CEO of Hyundai’s India operations explained at the event that The Creta EV is a significant milestone as “our first localized electric SUV in India.” Although the automaker has already sold over 1.1 million Creta SUVs, the electric model “promises to redefine the market.”

New Creta Electric SUV Features

The new EV model features significant improvement from the gas model. It comes with IONIQ-like design elements, including a new pixelated front grille, lower bumper and LED tail lamp. It also includes new Active Air Flaps (AAF), Aero Alloy Wheels, and Low Rolling Resistance tires for improved efficiency and performance.

It has two battery pack options such as 42 kWh offering 242 miles(390 km) ARAI driving range and 51.4 kWh providing 293 miles (473 km) range. The EV can be charged from 10% to 80% in 58 minutes with DC fast charging. Also if connected with the 11 kW Smart Connected Wall Box charger, it can fully charge (10% to 100%) in 4 hours.

Hyundai’s new electric SUV comes with several upgrades over the gas-powered model, including features like vehicle-to-load (V2L) for powering electronics and other devices on the go. It also boasts an ergonomic shift-by-wire driving system and a digital key for enhanced convenience.

The Hyundai Creta EV comes in four variants: Executive, Smart, Premium, and Excellence. Buyers can choose from eight monotone colors, two dual-tone options, and three matte finishes, including an exclusive ocean blue with a black roof.

Hyundai is set to announce the prices closer to its official launch on January 17, 2025, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. While the 2024 gas-powered Creta starts at around $12,800 (Rs 10.99 Lakh), the electric version is expected to be priced closer to $25,000 (Rs 22.00 Lakh).

The downside for US customers is that Hyundai’s new Creta electric SUV isn’t expected to be available in the country. However, Hyundai is introducing the 2025 IONIQ 5 and the first-ever three-row IONIQ 9, both of which qualify for the $7,500 US tax credit.

What are your thoughts on the new Creta Electric? Would you consider buying it for around $25,000, or are you leaning towards the IONIQ 5 or 9 models instead? Share your thoughts in the comments!
