Since its re-entry into the Japanese market in early 2022, automaker brand has introduced a limited lineup of vehicles, focusing on electrification and clean energy. These models include the IONIQ 5, a popular electric crossover; the Kona Electric, a compact and versatile EV; and the Nexo FCEV, a hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle. Hyundai’s strategic offerings emphasize its commitment to sustainable mobility, catering to Japan’s growing interest in EVs and eco-friendly transportation solutions.
The Inster EV marks Hyundai’s fourth electric vehicle and could be its most significant hit yet. On Friday, Hyundai began taking orders for the new EV in Japan, pricing it at just 2,849,000 yen (around $18,000), making it Hyundai’s most affordable electric car to date.

Look Into Hyundai’s Affordable EV
In its size the Inster EV (3,830 mm long, 1,610 mm wide, and 1,615 mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,580 mm) is slightly smaller than BYD’s Dolphin (4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, 1,570 mm tall, wheelbase of 2,700 mm).
In Korea, it features a 49 kWh battery, offering up to 195 miles (315 km) of driving range. In Europe, the Casper Electric delivers up to 221 miles (355 km) WLTP range, showcasing its efficiency in urban and suburban settings. For the Japanese market, Hyundai offers flexibility with 42 kWh and 49 kWh battery options, appealing to cost-conscious consumers seeking reliable and eco-friendly transportation.
Hyundai’s new low-cost EV takes aim at the Japanese market by undercutting competitors like the BYD Dolphin, which starts at approximately $24,500 (3.63 million yen). Positioned as one of the most affordable electric cars in Japan, this EV is expected to drive Hyundai’s growth in the region. In 2024, company sold just over 600 vehicles in Japan, a figure dwarfed by BYD’s 2,200 units. Since its 2023 entry, BYD has gained momentum with popular EVs such as the Dolphin, Atto 3 SUV, and Seal, making the competition fierce in the Japanese market.
