China is one of the top competitors in the EV market. After successfully thriving in the electric car market, now it’s time for electric pickups. The Radar R6 is now rolling out overseas after becoming China’s first mass-market 100% electric pickup.
The electric pickup was launched by Volvo owner Geely in 2022 with claims that “it’s China’s first pure electric outdoor lifestyle brand”. To make it real, the brand launched its first vehicle, the Radar R6, within the time frame of six months, at the starting price of about $25,000.
Electric Pickup Specs and Technology
The electric pickup is based on Geely’s SEA platform, which underpins Volvo’s electric minivan, the EM90, sold in China. It is available with the three different battery pack options, such as 63 kWh, 86 kWh, and 100 kWh. According to the CLTC range estimate, it goes up to 392 miles (632 km).
After successfully overtaking the Chinese market, now Geely began exporting models to new markets like Thailand under the name Riddara. Riddara is now sold in over countries and regions, including the parts of Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Central America, and South America.
Now the EV brand is planning to expand to other growing markets, including Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil, aiming to sell 30,000 models with “NEV pickup market leadership in every region”.
On this note, CEO Mr. Ling Shiquan said, “In 2025, Geely Riddara will enter a new phase of global corporation.” Brand also claims that the R6 (RD6) is “more than just a pickup” with the unique ability to drive like an SUV. Also, the global version is available in rear- and all-wheel-drive powertrains.
Geely’s Radar Auto has made significant strides in the electric pickup market with its RD6 and the more affordable King Kong models. The RD6, particularly in its AWD Horizon trim, boasts impressive specifications: a dual-motor system delivering 315 kW (422 hp) and 594 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. It offers a CLTC range of up to 520 km, a towing capacity of 3,000 kg, and a wading depth of 815 mm. Additional features include a 21 kW external power output and seven driving modes tailored for various terrains.
In contrast, the King Kong model provides a more budget-friendly option without compromising essential features. Starting at approximately $13,700, it offers both RWD and AWD configurations. The RWD variant comes with a 180 kW (241 hp) motor, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds, while the AWD version delivers 280 kW (375 hp) and reaches 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Battery options range from 42 to 86 kWh, supporting a CLTC range between 310 km and 605 km .
For consumers seeking an electric pickup that balances performance and affordability, the Radar King Kong presents a compelling choice. Its combination of power, range, and price point makes it a noteworthy contender in the EV market.
