BYD is stepping up its game to win over younger drivers with its newest electric SUV – the BYD Atto 2. Launched in Hong Kong on Friday, the Atto 2 starts at under $22,000, making it about 30% cheaper than Tesla’s most affordable model.
This move comes after automaker outsold Tesla for the first time in Hong Kong during the first half of this year. Now, the company is turning up the heat with an even more budget-friendly EV option. The right-hand-drive Atto 2 is priced from HKD 169,800 (around $21,700). Speaking at the launch, company’s Asia-Pacific sales manager, Liu Xueliang, highlighted the competitive pricing, saying it’s “very affordable” and offers great value.
Compared to rivals, the numbers speak for themselves. Tesla’s entry-level Model 3 RWD costs about HKD 249,000 ($31,700), making the Atto 2 a tempting choice for cost-conscious buyers. The model first launched in Europe earlier this year and in China (under the name Yuan Up) in 2024, and it’s now officially available in Hong Kong.
Liu revealed that BYD’s primary goal with the Atto 2 is to attract younger customers, offering them “the best value-for-money products” in the EV market. And despite its low price, the SUV comes packed with features, including BYD’s Smart Cockpit with voice control, smartphone integration, and multiple driver-assist systems.
BYD Atto 2 Speed and Range
The Atto 2 delivers a range of up to 410 km (254 miles) and can charge from 10% to 80% in just 38 minutes – more than enough for daily commuting needs.
While Hong Kong may be a relatively small market, it plays a crucial role as a gateway to the global right-hand-drive segment. Since introducing the slightly larger Atto 3 in 2022, BYD has sold over 170,000 EVs in the region, holding about 30% market share. As of June, its top seller was the Sealion 07, a smart mid-size SUV launched at the end of 2024.
