Lucid Motors is one of the leading luxury electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer known for its high-end sedans, is preparing to make a significant move into the mainstream market. The company is planning to launch it’s two new midsize EVs priced around $50,000. It is a strategic step of brand aimed at catapulting Lucid’s sales into the hundreds of thousands and establishing the brand as a household name worldwide.
But the company’s ambitions don’t stop there. According to recent reports, Lucid has an entire “midsize program” in the works, which will introduce three more affordable models to its lineup. While the first two models are designed to compete directly with the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, the third model remains a mystery, sparking curiosity and speculation within the industry.
Derek Jenkins, Lucid Motors’ senior vice president of design, shed some light on the company’s plans in a recent conversation with CarBuzz. While Jenkins didn’t reveal specifics of the third model, he hinted at some possibilities. Lucid’s design team has a soft spot for wagons, but Jenkins acknowledged that the wagon market is in decline, making it a risky investment.
So, what could this third model be? Jenkins mentioned that Lucid Motors sees significant growth potential in the off-road space, a segment he believes will continue to “morph and evolve.” This suggests that the third model could be a high-riding vehicle designed with off-road capabilities in mind. Some speculate that it might even be named the Lucid Ocean.
Jenkins added on the growing diversity within the off-road segment, stating, “You’re going to have products that are trying to cater to the fringe of off-roading, like rock crawling, and then you have your normal crossover products.” With Lucid already planning a Model Y rival as its “normal crossover,” the stage seems set for a more rugged, off-road-focused vehicle that could compete with the likes of the Rivian R2.
The off-road electric crossover market is gaining traction, with major players like Jeep and Mercedes-Benz investing in this space. Jeep is developing the Recon, an off-road-focused EV, alongside a fully electric Wrangler, while Mercedes-Benz is working on a smaller, battery-electric version of its iconic G-Wagen. Lucid’s potential entry into this market indicates that the company has done its homework and sees a promising future for such vehicles.
Lucid has ambitious plans to eventually sell one million cars per year, and the midsize program is a critical part of this strategy. While there’s no official timeline for the launch of Lucid Motors’ midsize off-roader, it could be unveiled alongside the other two models, which are expected to enter production before the end of 2026.
