GM’s joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling, unveiled the first teaser images of it’s upcoming Starlight S electric SUV, on Monday. With the new electric SUV brand aiming to take on BYD and Tesla in China. SAIC-GM-Wuling is a joint venture between China’s SAIC and GM while the rese belong to Liuzhou, Guangxi Province based Wuling.
The new electric SUV is the second model of the brand under the Wuling Silver Label. The first EV model Starlight electric Sedan was launched by the brand at the Beijing Auto Show in April. Whereas the PHEV version debuted last December. The pricing of the EV version starts around $13,800 (99,800 yuan) and for the PHEV $12,400 (105,800 yuan).
As China’s MIIT reveals about the electric SUV, it is 4,745 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, and 1,690 mm tall in size. That makes it one of the rivals to BYD’s Song Plus- 4,775 mm long, 1,890mm wide and 1,690 mm tall. Tesla’s RWD Model Y- 4,751 mm long, 1,978mm wide and 1,612 mm tall.
The teaser images of the EV follows the recent GM’s Wuiling brand launched the 2024 Bingo EV last week. It is launched as a low cost electric car starting at $9,800 (70,800 yuan) that rivals BYD’s cheapest Seagull EV starts with $9,700 (69,800 yuan).
For pricing of the electric SUV, it is expected to start around $9,700 (69,800 yuan). Whereas the prices of BYD’s Song Plus DM-i (PHEV) starts at $23,900 (169,800 yuan) and EV models start at $25,300 (179,800 yuan).
Although at present not much details has been revealed by the brand including the range but it will feature a 201 hp (250 kW) electric motor and LFP battery pack.
